Op-ed: Thernstrom and Saunders call for new federal support for nuclear energy
EIRP authors praise state-level nuclear efforts, recommend federal steps to accelerate deployment
In “Fast-tracking nuclear power will take federal support,” in the Albany Times Union, EIRP President Samuel Thernstrom and Senior Advisor Paul Saunders highlight increasing state-level policy support for nuclear energy while urging new federal policy actions to accelerate nuclear energy deployment. “One would not expect New York and Texas to agree on much about energy policy,” they write, pointing out that this “unlikely pair” is far from alone: over a dozen other states are working to add nuclear generation, including California, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Virginia.
Still, they argue, “first movers face greater risk” and federal support will be key in helping states overcome this and other obstacles to new nuclear generation. Thernstrom and Saunders describe several key findings and recommendations from EIRP’s Working Group on U.S. Nuclear Energy Dominance and its report, How America Can Achieve Nuclear Energy Dominance.
