Panel Discussion of Solar PV Manufacturing in the United States and South Korea

On November 2, 2023, EIRP hosted an online seminar presenting two new reports in EIRP’s U.S.-Korea Energy Series. EIRP President Paul Saunders moderated this discussion of U.S. and Korean solar PV manufacturing and the challenges and opportunities facing the two countries as they seek to buttress their respective industries.

Costa Samaras, Principal Assistant Director for the Director for Energy and Chief of the Clean Energy Transition within the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, gave opening remarks detailing the Biden Administration’s goals, policies, and actions to bolster the U.S. solar industry.

Chinho Park, distinguished professor at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) and co-author of “South Korea’s Solar Power Industry: Status and Prospects,” discussed South Korea’s policy on solar manufacturing and the current Korean domestic solar market. He also shared his perspective on U.S. policy and U.S.-Korea solar collaboration.

David Hart, professor of Public Policy in the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University and author of “Diversify, Domesticate, and Disrupt: Strengthening America’s Nascent Effort to Build a Resilient and Robust Solar PV Supply Chain,” analyzed the U.S.’s solar market and policies and set out a strategy for developing America’s solar photovoltaic supply chains in partnership with U.S. allies including South Korea.

Jae Ho Yun, professor at KENTECH and co-author of “South Korea’s Solar Power Industry: Status and Prospects,” presented policy recommendations for South Korea’s government to advance the country’s domestic solar market and improve U.S.-Korea solar collaboration.
