Report – The Case for Commercial Recycling of Used Nuclear Fuel: Assessment and Recommendations
New EIRP Paper Finds Used Nuclear Fuel Recycling Safe, Ready, and Urgent for America
EIRP’s report The Case for Commercial Recycling of Used Nuclear Fuel: Assessment and Recommendations finds that recent technological advances, market shifts, and geopolitical factors make commercial used nuclear fuel recycling both feasible and strategically urgent for the United States. EIRP produced the report in partnership with advanced reactor developer Oklo.
The report argues that the moment is right for the U.S. government and private sector firms to take on UNF recycling for three reasons: improved economics and energy security, reducing nuclear waste, and strengthening nonproliferation. In addition the report presents broad policy recommendations for the executive branch and the Congress to facilitate commercial UNF recycling.
EIRP Senior Advisor Paul J. Saunders and CEO Samuel Thernstrom collaborated with Oklo’s Director of Fuel Cycle Technology, Dr. Christina Leggett, in writing the paper.
